South Africa faces India in the much-anticipated first T20I of the four-match series at Kingsmead in Durban. After a tough loss to India in the T20 World Cup final earlier this year, South Africa, led by Aiden Markram, will be eager for redemption. We’ve prepared the best bets and a prediction for the first T20I of the series.
Venue: Kingsmead.
Betting Preview
Due to the physical and mental demands of modern cricket, only eight of the 15-man South African squad from the September series against Ireland remain. CSA’s “conditioning blocks” policy rests contracted players for up to 12 weeks, and this series sees the return of seamer Gerald Coetzee and all-rounder Marco Jansen, who haven’t played for the Proteas since May and June, respectively. Lungi Ngidi now joins Kagiso Rabada on the sidelines for rest. New additions include uncapped all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwani, who impressed in the CSA T20 Challenge, and the experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj.
Fans will be glad to see power hitters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller back in action. Notable absentees include Quinton de Kock, who is still considering his international future, as well as Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi.
India, fresh off a 3-0 sweep over Bangladesh, has also made squad changes. All-rounder Ramandeep Singh earns a maiden call-up, and Karnataka’s Vijaykumar Vyshak is set to debut after his IPL run. Injuries keep out Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag, and Mayank Yadav, while VVS Laxman steps in as interim coach with Gautam Gambhir preparing for the upcoming Test series against Australia.
South Africa will aim to make a strong statement after the heartbreak of missing out on their first ICC trophy to India earlier this year. With key players back in the lineup, the Proteas’ batting unit looks formidable compared to their opponents, which could be the deciding factor. Expect South Africa to edge out a win in the opening match at 1.95.
Key Battle: India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav has made four T20I centuries more than all the current Proteas batters put together. He has the second most T20I Player of the Match awards and the second most runs scored ever in a calendar year (1164). South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj’s economy rate of 7.11 is the best of the current squad. However, that rate ramps up to 8.45 rpo when playing against India. Maharaj has bowled 43 balls to SKY in T20s conceding 63 runs (SR-160) and is yet to dismiss him.
