Having been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Premier League 2021 season has been postponed indefinitely. This comes after Sunrisers Hyderabad wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha tested positive for Covid-19 along with Delhi Capitals spinner, Amit Mishra.
We have selected the team of the tournament so far.
Shikhar Dhawan – Delhi Capitals
Dhawan has had a fantastic start to this year’s IPL season. He has scored 380 runs in eight matches for the DC. He is currently the competition’s leading run-scorer and has continued where he left off from last season. In 2020 he finished as runner up to KL Rahul in the top run-scorer standings. His opening partnership with Prithvi Shaw has been one of the reasons why the Capitals are currently at the top of the IPL standings
KL Rahul – Punjab Kings
The Indian opener is having another stellar season as he is second only behind Dhawan in the leading run-scorer standings. He has scored 331 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 136.27 which has slightly improved from last season (129.34). He has been the standout performer for the Punjab Kings again this season.
Faf du Plessis – Chennai Super Kings
Faf du Plessis is another opener who has had a fantastic IPL campaign so far. He had scored four fifties on the trot before the IPL was postponed. He has also developed a good opening partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad. They have both been outstanding for the Super Kings but Faf’s consistency makes him a better pick.
The former South African captain has scored 320 runs in seven matches at an average of 64.00. His performances have meant that CSK are having a much better season than the previous one as they are currently second on the table.
Glenn Maxwell – Royal Challengers Bangalore
Surprisingly, Glen Maxwell has had a decent IPL this season. It’s a surprise because he continuously failed to deliver for the Punjab Kings in his time with them. He has scored 223 runs this season with a highest score of 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Maxwell’s improved performances have meant that RCB aren’t too reliant on AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. This has resulted in them having a great season so far as they are currently third on the table.
AB de Villiers – Royal Challengers Bangalore
There’s not much more to say when it comes to Mr 360. He has been at his absolute best so far this season. The South African has scored 207 runs at a strike rate of 164.28. His 76 of 34 balls was another of his trademark innings where he took the game away from the the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 37-year-old has been immense for Royal Challengers in this campaign along with Maxwell. They’ll both be hoping that the IPL returns soon so de Villiers can finally win the IPL with RCB.
Moeen Ali – Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings’ recruitment of Moeen Ali was a great piece of business. He is a very gifted player and has proven that in this campaign. He has scored 206 runs in six matches and taken five wickets at an economy rate of 6.16. These are great numbers in T20 cricket.
He has brought a much needed balance to the CSK batting lineup. His performances along with a few others are the reason why the Super Kings are second in the IPL table.
Ravindra Jadeja – Chennai Super Kings
Jadeja is one of the players that have been pivotal to CSK’s success this season. His contributions with bat and ball have been invaluable for MS Dhoni’s men. Like Ali, he brings a balance to the side with his performances with bat and ball
The Indian left-arm orthodox has scored 131 runs and taken six wickets in seven matches for CSK. He has an unbelievable average of 131.00 with the bat this season and will be hoping his fine form continues.
Chris Morris – Rajasthan Royals
Chris Morris became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL when he moved to Rajasthan Royals this season. It’s fair to say that he is delivering on what he was brought in to do. He has taken the second most wickets in this season’s IPL. Morris has taken 14 wickets in seven matches with an economy rate of 8.61. His highest score with the bat was his match-winning 36 of 18 balls against the Delhi Capitals.
Harshal Patel – Royal Challengers Bangalore
Patel has been Virat Kolhi’s go-to bowler for breakthroughs this season. The medium-pacer has already taken more wickets this season than he did in his last five seasons combined. He is the top wicket taker in the competition with 17 wickets in seven matches with one five-for against Mumbai Indians.
Rashid Khan – Sunrisers Hyderabad
Khan has been Sunrisers Hyderabad’s standout performer this season. He’s had a fantastic campaign so far taking 10 wickets at an economy rate of 6.14. He finished sixth last season in the top wicket-taker standings with a ridiculous economy rate of 5.37.
Avesh Khan – Delhi Capitals
Khan has had a terrific season for the Delhi Capitals. He has stepped up for Ricky Ponting’s team in the absence of Anrich Nortje and also the struggling (at times) Kagiso Rabada. He’s been the surprise package of IPL 2021 taking 14 wickets in eight matches. His performances have propelled the Capitals to the top of the IPL standings
