Betting Preview

Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Mumbai Indians in one of two IPL 2021 matches today, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. After Kolkata Knight Riders’ crushing 86-run win against Rajasthan Royals, the task for defending champions Mumbai Indians to book a playoff spot has become quite improbable. Simply put, they need a miracle. They not only need to win, but they also need to win big because of the gap between their net run-rate (-0.048) and Knight Riders’ 0.587, which was already at 0.294 before their win against Royals.

Mumbai played their part in bridging that Net Run Rate deficit with Kolkata by thrashing hapless Rajasthan on Tuesday, registering one of their largest powerplay scores of the season (56/2) after restricting the Royals to the IPL’s second-lowest 20-over score (90/9) in history. Career-best IPL figures from Nathan Coulter-Nile (4/14), James Neesham (3/12) and Ishan Kishan’s first score of 30+ (50* from 25 balls) of 2021 suggest the Rohit Sharma’s men could be peaking at the right time.

However, Sunrisers Hyderabad reminded the competition on Wednesday that the team with nothing to lose can be the team to fear most after hampering Royal Challengers Bangalore’s aspirations for a top-two finish. They can avoid matching RCB’s W3, L11 record of 2017 with their first back-to-back triumphs of 2021 with a repeat of last year’s final day win over Mumbai in Sharjah. On this occasion, however, Sunrisers have no playoffs to compete for and boast only one player (Wriddiman Saha) with more than 100 career runs in Mumbai v Hyderabad H2Hs.

Sunrisers would want to save two of their best bowlers, Bhuvneshwar and Rashid Khan, for the belligerent Kieron Pollard. Even though Bhuvneshwar has dismissed Pollard as many as four times in 11 innings, he has leaked 96 runs off 59 balls to the batter. Rashid’s record is way better; 68 runs conceded off 79 balls with one dismissal. If Mumbai Indians chase today, Sunrisers could keep Rashid’s two-odd overs for whenever Pollard comes out to bat.

Hyderabad have lost 11 of their last 14 games without star opener David Warner and are likely to have to prepare for life without the Australian. Their woes have also resulted from some poor starts with the ball also. Sunrisers’ bowlers have taken just nine powerplay wickets at an average of 62.44 runs per wicket inside the powerplay which is by far the worst record in the league which may gift Mumbai the opportunity to record the highest opening partnership for just the fifth time this year.

For Kane Williamson’s side. pride is all they can play for. The Orange Army are assured of finishing at the bottom of the table and they’ll want to end their campaign on a high. This is another difficult one to predict but with nothing to lose, I’d go for Hyderabad to cause an upset this afternoon.

Stat Attack

11 of the last 14 IPL matches in Abu Dhabi have been won by the chasing side.

Hyderabad have posted the highest opening partnership in the last 11 H2Hs and the highest powerplay score in the last eight, albeit with Bairstow and Warner largely responsible.

Five of the last eight IPL matches in Abu Dhabi have been won by the underdogs.

Rashid Khan has dismissed Hardik Pandya twice for just 18 runs (economy rate 3.27rpo).

Rohit Sharma averages 50.00 at a strike rate of 125 against the bowling of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Ishan Kishan is yet to be dismissed by Rashid in the IPL, despite having faced 45 balls off him. Kishan is the only left-hand batter to have not been dismissed by Rashid after having faced more than 30 balls.

Players To Watch

Courtesy of three and two-wicket hauls against Punjab and Kolkata last month, Jasprit Bumrah is now the IPL’s leading wicket-taker in Abu Dhabi, with 18 from ten matches (average 15.56, economy 7.00). He’s likely to tackle Sunrisers’ top run-scorer for 2021, Kane Williamson, who has a T20 average of 55.00 against Bumrah and an outstanding 218 runs from five innings in Abu Dhabi

Best Bets

Suggested Bet: SRH to win 2.45

Suggested Bet: Bumrah to be MI’s top bowler 3.50

Suggested Bet: Rashid Khan to be SRH’s top bowler 3.00
