Betting Preview
Match 44 of IPL 2021 features two teams with vastly differing goals. For the 8-2 Chennai Super Kings, a win will all but confirm their double chance ranking come the playoffs, while for the 2-8 Sunrisers Hyderabad, this match is more about pride, maybe a little fun, while at the same time impressing enough to guarantee a contract for 2022.
It may have only been a singular win (after losing five in a row), but it seemed a chunk of weight was lifted off the Sunrisers’ shoulders on Monday (defeating Rajasthan by seven wickets), a win achieved by passing 165 runs with the bat for just the second time in their last nine matches.
Other than their struggles with the bat, one of the main reasons for the Sunrisers difficulties in 2021 has been the ineffectiveness of their bowlers in the powerplay with just seven total wickets taken. The runs per wicket allowed during that period (63.14) is also a league worse, 14 runs more than any other team.
This Chennai Super Kings side – which is one win away from a spot in the playoffs – functions at a very high level because of a stable first XI with clear role definitions. Faf du Plessis is the aggressor. And while he takes care of the run-rate, Ruturaj Gaikwad can simply play to his best tempo.
Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu are perfect as No. 3 and 4 because of their natural ability to attack spin bowling. It is thanks to their efforts that Super Kings have been the quickest scoring team (9.05) in the middle overs (7-16) this season. Then comes Ravindra Jadeja, whose batting and finishing ability has shot through the roof
Not only do CSK enter the latter games of the season as the clear in-form team of the competition with just two defeats in their last 13 matches, but their record against the Sunrisers since 2018 (7-2) is also extremely strong. The latter advantage has been earned despite a similar wicket loss count during that period of 36-40, highlighting how much stronger the CSK bowlers have been when it comes to runs allowed per over (7.62 v 8.10). I can only see another win for the Yellow Army.
Stat Attack
CSK have a very strong 6-3 H2H record against the Sunrisers when playing at a neutral venue.
Over the last three seasons, the Sunrisers have a 5-14 record when playing as the underdog.
CSK have had the best bowler of the match in seven of their ten matches this season.
Rashid Khan (Sunrisers) has taken at least one wicket in his last seven IPL matches.
Players To Watch
Kane Williamson (SRH) has hit 17 IPL fifties – one of which he scored last match. Of those 17, he has managed to score a follow up fifty in his very next innings on five occasions (29.4%). Despite having bowled 46.3 overs against the Sunrisers, Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) has only taken four wickets at an average of 90.25.
