Betting Preview
Two teams hoping to jump back into the top four, the Punjab Kings (3-5) and Rajasthan Royals (3-4), square off Tuesday evening (local time) at Dubai International Stadium. The current H2H slightly favours the Royals 12-10, though the Kings enjoy a slight edge in recent times having won three of the past five.
As is the norm for Punjab over the last couple of seasons, so much focus revolves around the top three of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle, and whether Gayle’s attacking nature is best suited to him opening. But keep in mind that Rahul (136.21) and Agarwal (141.30) both have superior strike rates so far in IPL2021 to Gayle (133.83), with the two openers having combined for six fifties while Gayle has zero.
When it comes to squad changes, the Kings have sought player replacements for Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith and the world’s number one ranked T20I batsman Dawid Malan, with the trio all staying at home. Aiden Markram, Adil Rashid and Nathan Ellis are the new faces, with big-game player Rashid bowling just eight IPL overs (two matches in the UAE) but for the figures of 2/18 and 1/29.
Ranked second overall for runs per game (173.14), but eighth for runs conceded (172.43) highlights where Rajasthan are having difficulties so far this season, not to mention the fact the Royals have gone 18 games without recording back-to-back wins! That’s a trend they will have a chance to break here having won their last match against Sunrisers.
Like the Kings, the Royals have been severely affected by player absence with Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Andrew Tye all unavailable for phase two. Their replacements are Glenn Phillips, Evin Lewis, Oshane Thomas and Tabraiz Shamsi, who is the leading wicket taker this year (28) in T20Is and well worth keeping an eye on.
Stat Attack
Punjab have an all-time 53-57 W/L record when losing the toss, but their return drops significantly to 35-53 when they win the toss.
Rajasthan are the only team that currently concede more than four x 6s a match during the middle overs (average 4.14).
Punjab have only won this year (three times) when playing as the underdog.
Riyan Parag has bowled just the one over against the Kings, but took the wicket of Gayle (back in April).
Players To Watch
Gayle (Punjab) needs a score of at least fifty to reach 5,000 IPL runs. If achieved, he would become just the seventh player to pass that milestone. All of Sanju Samson’s (Rajasthan) last three IPL innings have resulted in scores in the forties (42*, 42 & 48) and his average against Punjab from 17 innings of 45.07 is his best against any opponent
