Betting Preview
Two teams that have had very contrasting seasons will do battle in match 53 of the 2021 Indian Premier League when the Chennai Super Kings take on the Punjab Kings tomorrow at the Dubai International Stadium.
Chennai Super Kings have already qualified for the playoffs. However, two points against Punjab Kings will all but assure a top-two finish and put pressure on Delhi Capitals (and possibly Royal Challengers Bangalore). MS Dhoni’s CSK won 9 of their first 11 matches in the 2021 IPL but are now on a poorly-timed two-match losing streak. In their most recent outing, CSK lost to Delhi Capitals by three wickets.
Ambati Rayudu stepped up with 55 after a tough start in the UAE, having previously been averaging only 15.25 with the bat since the tournament’s postponement. While Punjab’s Mohammed Shami is a constant threat with the ball, Faf du Plessis averages an impressive 69.00 with the bat at a strike rate of 181.57 against the seam bowler. That promises to be a key battle early in the CSK innings.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, are sixth in the table and two points off the playoff places with one match remaining. KL Rahul’s side need to beat CSK and hope that Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad defeat Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, respectively. In that scenario, they may just sneak a top-four finish on net run rate. Unfortunately, the Kings have struggled to string results together this season, and have lost three of their last five matches.
Punjab will undoubtedly continue to rely on Mayank Agarwal (429 runs) and KL Rahul (528 runs). The pair is closing in on 1000 runs between them in this season’s IPL. Punjab needs the Orange Cap holder, KL Rahul to pick up his strike rate against Chennai to post or chase down a big total. Currently, Rahul is striking at 129, the second-lowest of any of the top seven run-scorers for 2021.
The young left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has been an exciting find for Punjab this season, taking a five-wicket haul against Rajasthan. With 15 wickets from just six IPL games in Dubai, he could play a key role once again. The toss may prove crucial for Punjab, with the franchise winning 68.97% of matches when winning the toss and bowling first.
Despite their recent patchy form and Punjab Kings having everything to play for, Chennai Super Kings should win this match.
Stat Attack
Punjab Kings have won four of their last five matches in Dubai.
The coin toss winner has gone on to win just 36% of IPL matches in Dubai.
Six of the nine IPL games played in Dubai this year have been won by the chasing side.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has amassed 243 runs from his five innings in Dubai at an average of 81.00.
In three of their last seven matches, Harpreet Brar has registered Punjab’s best bowling figures.
Players To Watch
Chennai’s Moeen Ali has proved to be the difference on multiple occasions against Punjab. The spinner has an economy rate of only 5.67 against Punjab, combined with a batting average of over 25 in 2021. For Punjab, Mohammed Shami will be the key with the ball. The pacer has taken 18 wickets this season at an average of just over 20, averaging two wickets per innings in this UAE phase.
