Preview
Rajasthan Royals (RR) will become the second-last team to kickstart their campaign in this IPL 2020 season. They face Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a team that they’ve not had too much success against, in this match.
Overall, RR have faced CSK in 21 IPL games and have lost 14 of them. And since their return, they’ve had only one win over the MS Dhoni-led side in four encounters. Hence, they will have their task cut out especially without their talisman Jos Buttler who will miss their first game of the tournament due to quarantine rules.
The experienced players like Sanju Samson, Steve Smith, Robin Uthappa and David Miller will need to take responsibility for the batting. They have a decent bowling attack as well, led by Jofra Archer and Jaydev Unadkat. Shreyas Gopal is a gun T20 spinner as well.
Meanwhile, CSK broke a five-game losing streak against Mumbai Indians in their last game and have started the season well. Their powerplay performance with both bat and ball was a problem but they pulled things back nicely. The form of Ambati Rayudu will please the CSK camp. Imran Tahir was surprisingly left out and might continue to sit out with the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Sam Curran and Piyush Chawla doing well. The batting line-up looks settled with the only concern about Murali Vijay’s form at the top of the order.
Injury and Availability News
os Buttler is going to miss the opening game for the Rajasthan Royals as he travelled separately to the UAE and is under a six-day quarantine. The availability of Ben Stokes continues to be a mystery and he has not joined the team yet. As things go for CSK, the management has confirmed that Dwayne Bravo will miss out on at least two games more due to fitness issues.
Probable Playing XI
Rajasthan Royals
Robin Uthappa, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (wk), Steven Smith (c), David Miller, Riyan Parag, Tom Curran, Shreyas Gopal, Jofra Archer, Jaydev Unadkat, Ankit Rajpoot/Mayank Markande
Chennai Super Kings
Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Deepak Chahar, Piyush Chawla, Lungi Ngidi
Key Players to Watch Out For
Faf du Plessis: The former South African skipper batted beautifully and played second fiddle to Ambati Rayudu in the first game. He looked in good touch and finished off the game for CSK. With Raina not available for this season, du Plessis’ role becomes crucial as the anchor batting at 3 or even if he opens.
Sanju Samson: For quite a few years now, Sanju Samson plays one or two big knocks every IPL and then goes flat in most other matches. The Kerala batsman will want to correct that. He had a good domestic season and was even around the Indian T20I side earlier this year. And with Jos Buttler not playing this game, the onus will be on someone like Samson to bat long.
Sam Curran: The left-handed all-rounder from England had a big impact on CSK’s win over MI. Numbers might just one wicket with the ball and 18 runs with the bat, but Curran was in action all the time.
