England ended Day 1 on 506 for 4 against Pakistan to break a record that has stood since 1910. They became the first team to score more than 500 runs on the first day of a Test. Brendon McCullum’s side also scored the second-most runs in a single day of a Test, behind Sri Lanka’s 509 on day two against Bangladesh in 2002.
There were a few other records broken by the English batsmen including having four centurions on the first day of a Test match as Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook and Ollie Pope all scored tons on a flat pitch in Rawalpindi.
Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett smashed an opening stand of 233 in 35.4 overs, scoring at a rate of 6.53, making it the highest run rate in an opening partnership of 200 or more runs in Test cricket. Brendon McCullum’s impact on this English side is clear to see as Harry Brook hit six fours in an over off debutant Saud Shakeel, making it just the fifth instance of a batter hitting six fours in one over of a Test match.
