The build-up has begun to the biggest day in South African horse racing.

Tradition dictates the final field announcement for the Durban July commences this countdown, and the prestigious 18 runners (plus 2 reserves) have been publicised.

Most participants merit entry through qualifying races, prior successes and the ability to make this race as competitive as possible. This year there were only a handful of places undecided leading up to the announcement, such is the quality of the 2019 field.

The following big name contenders look set to fight it out as the bookies favourite:
