World Rugby Sydney Sevens: Punters Guide

After a disappointing performance in Hamilton, the Blitzboks will be out to prove a point at the Sydney Sevens on Saturday and Sunday.

The men’s tournament kicks off at 02:57 on Saturday with the USA taking on Scotland. South Africa’s first match will be shortly afterwards at 03:41 against Argentina.

Next up on Saturday for the Blitzboks is a 09:30 showdown with fast-improving France, who made the final in Hamilton. South Africa will conclude their Pool B fixtures with a 02:51 clash with Samoa on Sunday.

Keep an eye out for the big Pool A showdown between defending world series champions Fiji and present leaders New Zealand. That one kicks off at 11:33 on Saturday.

New Zealand are odds-on favourites at 0.75. Next are South Africa at 2.70 with third favourites Fiji paying 8.50 to win. If you bet on an underdog and they claim the victory, there is a chance to win big.

It is difficult to choose between New Zealand and South Africa for this one. With several key South African players on Super Rugby duty, the Hamilton champions perhaps have the edge, but do not write off a Blitzboks side brimming with talent.

What might count in South Africa’s favour is that they have avoided the group of death with New Zealand and Fiji. Nevertheless, Neil Powell’s men ought not to underestimate France.

Australia should not be written off on home soil, particularly having nearly knocked New Zealand out in the Hamilton semi-finals. Nevertheless, the World Series leaders remain the safest bet.
